Tips For Picking Blueberries
1. Choose plump, full-sized blueberries that are light grey-blue. Any hint of red in a berry is partially ripe. Blueberries of the color white and green will not ripen once they have been picked. However, blueberries already purple, red, or blueish can ripen after being picked (if they are kept at a comfortable temperature).
2. Blueberries hang in clusters on the bushes, a lot like grapes. The easiest way to pick them is to hold your bucket under the brush with one hand. With your other hand, gently rub the bunch with your fingertips. The ripe blueberries will fall into your bucket, while the unripe ones will stay attached to the bush.
3. If the bushes are in peak condition, I can pick up 2 gallons an hour (if the sun isn’t too hot and I’m not distracted by kids). An average beginner might pick 1 gallon an hour, but it can take longer if the berries are less concentrated or plentiful.
4. After picking the berries, do not place them in a sealed bag or container. Keep the container open to prevent moisture from building up.
5. To prevent berries from becoming mushy, wash them before using them. To extend shelf life, chill berries as soon as they are picked. Your fresh blueberries should be kept in the refrigerator immediately after they arrive home. Fresh-picked blueberries can be held in the fridge for up to 14 days.
6. To prevent the skins from becoming tough, freeze berries in plastic containers. Place berries one layer deep. Place the berries in a single layer and freeze. Then, pour the frozen berries into containers. Unwashed blueberries can be poured into containers easily, as they freeze in individual portions.
7. Both fresh and frozen berries must be washed and dried before being served. Wash the berries in cold water just before use. To make a pie, you will need approximately 4 cups of blueberries.
